El-Jadida is a city on the Moroccan ocean coast, about 100 km south of Casablanca.

A fortified city, built by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 16th century and named Mazagan (Mazagao in Portuguese), it was conquered by the Moroccans in 1769. From the beginning of the 19th century, the city expanded beyond its walls. It had 194,934 inhabitants at the time of the 2014 census.

 

Economic activity:

El-Jadida's activities are centered on:

- Port activity, including the fishing port of El-Jadida and the mineral port of Jorf Lasfar. The deep-water port of Jorf is a key component of Morocco's port infrastructure, serving companies in the phosphate sector, including OCP.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortifications with their bastions and ramparts are an early example of Portuguese Renaissance military architecture. Don't miss within the city: the Church of the Assumption, the cistern (exterior view only; the interior is currently closed to visitors), the Mazagan Fortress, and the shops, cafes, and restaurants.
